The Complete Guide to Redsn0w 0.9.6rc12 (Untethered iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak)

A fairly new tool, Redsn0w is popular among iPhone/iPad/iPod touch users that do not wish to erase the current data on their device in order to jailbreak. Redsn0w provides a quick and easy ramdisk jailbreak that does not erase any personal data. The most recent release, 0.9.6rc12, includes a new option of “allowing boot animation,” (the Animate tool created by Chronic Dev Team).

Where do I start?

Contrary to popular belief, Redsn0w is very easy to use.
1. Start off by opening Redsn0w, and browse for the 4.3.1 firmware (.IPSW file) you want to use.
Redsn0w will process the firmware to make sure it is compatible, and if it is compatible you will see what is pictured here:
2. Click next. Redsn0w will start patching some files, and you will see this screen:
3. If you are simply wanting to jailbreak your device, just click Install Cydia and if you want the ability to have a boot animation go ahead and check off Allow boot animation as well.
4. Click next, and you will see Redsn0w tell you to make sure your device is turned off and plugged in. Click next again, and follow the onscreen instructions that Redsn0w provides and your device will enter DFU mode.
Once your device enters DFU mode, your device will start to be jailbroken by Redsn0w. You will see lots of white text scrolling down your screen, and eventually a progress indicator with the iPhone Dev Team boot logo (pictured below) will appear. Once that is done, your device will boot up, and Cydia will be on your homescreen. Easy!
