Tethered Jailbreak For Non-A5 Devices On iOS 5.1 Released By iPhone Dev-Team, Download Now [RedSn0w 0.9.10b6]

Apple released iOS 5.1 midst the new iPad launch yesterday, to which there was no jailbreak available. However, that has all changed now, as the iPhone Dev-Team have released RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 to jailbreak iOS 5.1. There’s one small problem though, this is a tethered jailbreak, which means that you will have to connect your iOS device to your computer every time you want to reboot.
The iOS 5.1 tethered jailbreak is only for non-A5 devices, which means that it will only work with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iPad 1. The iPad 2, the new iPad and the iPhone 4S are not supported. Also, if you want to preserve your baseband for unlock, then you should create a custom iOS 5.1 ipsw firmware and then get on with the jailbreak. Read more below:
Update #1:  First, please read and re-read the above warnings!  With all of that in mind, we realize that some of you non-A5 jailbreakers are itching to get to 5.1, even though there seems to be no compelling new feature there. Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6.  Here’s what you need to know:
  • This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices.  You’ll need to use redsn0w to “Just Boot” your device every time it power cycles, otherwise jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).
  • If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first!  Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW!  Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one.  (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.)  ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).
  • If you’re lucky enough to have an old-bootrom 3GS, this jailbreak is actually untethered (redsn0w will figure that part out automatically).
  • While we were at it, we added @pod2g’s steaks4uce exploit to support MC models of the iPod touch 2G (whose last firmware was 4.2.1).  So now redsn0w will auto-detect and jailbreak both MB and MC versions of that older device.
  • iBooks won’t work until a future update of redsn0w

Like Redsn0w, the jailbreak provided by the newly released Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 is currently of a tethered nature, meaning that if the device is powered down or requires a reboot for any reason, then it will need to be connected to a computer and rebooted into a jailbroken state to continue enjoying the Cydia based benefits. The update to Sn0wbreeze is also limited to those devices which are powered by Apple’s A4 processor, which as you might expect immediately rules out the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S as well as the latest iPad release when it eventually hits the shelves.
If you are the owner of an A4 or below (such as: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch) powered device, and can live with the tethered status of the jailbreak, then read on below for a step by step guide on using Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 to jailbreak iOS 5.1.
Creating custom firmware using Sn0wbreeze:
Step 1: Download a copy of the latest iOS 5.1 IPSW which is relevant to your device.
Step 2: Download and launch latest version of the Sn0wbreeze software, currently version 2.9.2.
Step 3: When presented with the main screen, click the blue arrow in the bottom right hand corner to continue.
Step 4: Sn0wbreeze will now provide the option to browse for the previously downloaded firmware file. Select ‘Browse‘ and point it to the location of the iOS 5.1 IPSW that we downloaded in step 1.
Step 5: If the firmware file is legitimate, Sn0wbreeze will process it briefly before displaying a page which shows a firmware verification message as well as the model of the attached device.
Step 6: Sn0wbreeze then presents the user with a number of selections. If you are planning on performing an unlock on iPhone 4 or 3GS (old basebands only), then select ‘Expert Mode‘ followed by the blue continue arrow.

Step 7: The next screen presents a number of options to cater for all usage types. If you are unsure about what each does, and all you care about is a simple jailbreak and Cydia installation, then select ‘Build IPSW‘ followed by clicking the continue arrow.
Step 8: Sn0wbreeze is a restore based tool and will now create a custom pwned iOS 5.1 firmware file. When completed, a confirmation screen will be presented with the successful completion of the process.

Step 9: The next step involves putting the device in DFU mode by following the on-screen instructions. When Sn0wbreeze detects DFU mode, the device’s screen will be black and a confirmation prompt will be shown.

Step 10: The custom created firmware now needs to be loaded onto the iDevice. Open iTunes with the device still in DFU mode and click on the device name in the left hand side bar of iTunes. Hold down SHIFT and press the restore option in the window to bring up a directory search prompt. Find the custom created IPSW and double click to select. The process will be same for any official iTunes based restore and when completed, the device will be loaded with a pre-jailbroken firmware.

As we mentioned earlier in the post, the current available jailbreak for iOS 5.1 using the Sn0wbreeze method is of a tethered nature, requiring a tethered boot in the event of any power cycles. In the event of your device powering down or rebooting, you will need to follow these steps every time.
Step 1: Launch the iBooty utility and find the relevant device from the drop down list before selecting the ‘Start‘ option.

Step 2: After beginning the process, iBooty requires DFU mode once again, which can be achieved by following the on-screen prompts.

Step 3: iBooty will now do its thing and boot the device into a tethered jailbreak state. When completed, it will present the user with a completion message. Job done.

AndyX Rom Gets You Android 4.0 on Galaxy S2 with ICS Launcher in place of TouchWiz

There’s a brand new Custom Ice Cream Sandwich ROM out for the Galaxy S2. It’s called AndyX v3.0 ROM, and it comes to us from XDA member adesirello, who also gave us the awesome looking and stable, Gingerbread based AndyX ROM. Having used the earlier iteration of AndyX, this is definitely worth a flash, and is on my agenda for tonight.

So what’s different about this custom ICS ROM? For starters, the ROM does not feature the standard Touchwiz interface, and adesirello has included the stock ICS launcher in place of Touchwiz; and I must say that it gives the ROM a very AOSPish feel. AndyX 3.o is based on the latest Stock Firmware XXLP2 Android 4.0.3, and comes pre-rooted. Personally, I think the stock ICS launcher looks a lot cleaner and more elegant than Touchwiz, but that’s just my two cents. Have a look at the screenshots above.

Without wasting any more time, and words, lets move on to see how we can get your Galaxy S2s up and running with this beauty of a ROM.

Pre-Installation Requirements

Rooted galaxy S2 running XXLP2 firmware. You can use this guide to download and install XXLP2. And this guide to root your Galaxy S2 after installing XXLP2
Installing/Flashing this ROM will erase your apps and data. So, it’s very important you back them up, before proceeding further. To backup your apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. Restore APN settings if Internet isn’t working for you. You can refer to this excellent Android Backup Guide to back up all your data and settings.

How To Install AndyX v3.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM on the Galaxy S2

Download the AndyX v3.0 ROM (link provided above) to your PC
Connect your phone to PC via USB cable and transfer the ROM zip file to the root of internal SDcard on the phone
Disconnect the phone & power it off
Reboot to Recovery (Press and hold Volume up button, the Home button and the Power button at the same time. Keep holding the buttons until you have reached the recovery mode.)
Once you are in Recovery, scroll down to Wipe Data/Factory reset and select it using the Power button
On the next screen, Select Yes — Wipe Data. Let CWM complete the wipe
Now Select Wipe Cache partition. On the next screen, Select Yes — Wipe Cache. Wait for the wipe to complete
Now scroll down to Advanced & select it using the Power button.
On the next screen, Select Wipe Dalvik Cache, and then Yes — Wipe Dalvik. Wait for the wipe to complete.
Once the Dalvik cache wipe is complete, Select ‘Wipe Battery Stats’ from the Advanced Menu, and confirm wipe.
Now go back to the Main menu, and select  ’Install zip from SDcard’
On the next screen select ‘Choose zip from Sdcard’ & Navigate to the ‘AndyX_ Rom_v3.0_ICS_4.0.3_XXLP2.zip’  file you transferred to the Sdcard in Step 2 above –> and confirm installation on the next screen
CWM will start flashing your ROM now. Wait for the installation to complete.
Once the installation is complete, select ‘Reboot System’ and let the phone reboot.
You’re done!! Once your phone boots up, Enjoy the AndyX Ice Cream Sandwich ROM on your device.

How to install android 4.0.3 ice cream sandwich for galaxy s2

Sporting a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM, the Galaxy S2 is certainly a worthy device capable of yet another upgrade.  Taking its roots from the previous Android 4.0.3 ICS XXKP8 firmware upgrade, the improved version features various bug fixes from the latter.

For those of you who can’t wait for the official ICS upgrade to be released, then you can try the Android 4.0.3 XXKPA upgrade, but you will need to manually update your phone.  If you installed the XXKP8 firmware earlier, you can also update to this version  because firmware XXKPA reportedly fixes many of the bugs and issues in the earlier firmware version.

Although firmware XXKPA still has some bugs and issues, users have reported that most of the apps seem to work in this version.  Touch response and the user interface are also reportedly faster and smoother.  Battery life is also reportedly longer with this build, and it is more stable than the previous build.

Important Notes
The instructions in this guide are known to work for the international variant (handset model GT-I9100) of the Galaxy S2 only, but not for the U.S. variants (such as the GT-I9100G).  You can check whether you have the I9100 model by dialing *#1234# on your phone and checking the model number.
This guide is also known to work for devices that are not network-locked.  If your device is network-locked, the instructions may not work.
If you’ve rooted your Galaxy S2 previously, you will lose root access after upgrading to firmware XXKPA.
Make a complete backup of your current working system before updating your phone.
Keep the phone at full charge, or with at least 70% of battery power.
Instructions
Download the Android 4.0.3 ICS package that contains the needed files for upgrading your device such as the Odin application and other essential firmware files.  Get the package here.
Extract the contents of the compressed package into a single folder on your computer.  (Use software for extracting RAR archives, such as WinRAR.)
Run Odin.exe file on your computer.
Enable USB debugging mode on your device by heading to “Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging”. Make sure that there is a check mark beside USB Debugging mode.
Turn off your phone and reboot it into Download mode. You can enter Download mode by simultaneously pressing down the Volume Down and Home button keys then pressing the Power button.
Once the device is already in Download mode, connect your device via USB cable to your computer while keeping the Odin app opened.
After a short while, the ID: COM section of the application will eventually turn yellow.  This means that the drivers for your device have been successfully installed and your device has been recognized by your computer.
In the Options section in the Odin application, make sure that only  “Auto Reboot”, and “F. Reset Time” are checked.
In the Odin application, click the tabs (specified in bold text below) and locate their associated extracted files that you have downloaded earlier.

Double check that you’ve loaded the correct files into their respective tabs.  If you load the wrong file into a tab, you could brick your phone.  So, double check.
After all the corresponding files have been matched, click the “Start” button in Odin for the installation process to begin. Once the firmware has been successfully installed, your device should reboot itself.  Allow it to reboot completely.
Disconnect your phone from your computer.
Turn off your phone.
Reboot it into Download mode again.
Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
Assuming that you didn’t close the Odin.exe application from the previous steps, click on the PDA button and select “I9100_KERNEL_I9100XXKP9_CL45181_REV02_eng_mid_ship.tar.md5″.  Make sure that only this file is loaded.  The other tabs (e.g., PIT, CSC, Phone) should not show any file loaded.
Make sure that only “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” are checked in the Options section.
Press the Start button in Odin to begin installing the new kernel. Once the installation is done your phone should reboot itself.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S2.
